PICKUP SYSTEMS:
Summary:
What are the differences in ZETA's three pickup systems?
The Jazz pickup produces pure, clear sound without overtones, harmonics,
or bow noise. It's a very clean sound. It provides the ultimate clarity in string tone and
is the best pickup for MIDI applications. Some of the Zeta instruments have the Jazz
pickup fitted but without the electronics and are therefore not MIDI compatible.
The Strados pickup delivers a clean, warm tone. It's individual pickup "fingers" dedicate dual piezos to each string that respond to the flex of the finger rather than vibrations, delivering a clear, rich tone, at high stage volumes with litte feedback sensitivity.
The E-series
pickup is preferred by country, bluegrass and folk musicians. It delivers a natural wood
tone, complete with bow noise and rich acoustic overtones. It delivers a clear, acoustic
tone.
E-Series Pickup System

The E-Series pickup system is an innovative and original design by Zeta. Applying
our proprietary dual piezo pickup system to traditional maple violin and viola bridges
results in a beautiful amplified acoustic sound with warmth and clarity even at high
amplification levels.
The Zeta E-Series violin and viola pickups react to the flex of the wooden bridge as
opposed to the simple vibration sensitivity of common electric violin transducer or piezo
pickup systems. As a result, the E-Series violin and viola pickups deliver a clear
acoustic tone with minimal sensitivity to the sound vibrations that create feedback in
high volume situations.
The use of multiple Zeta piezos also enhances the natural wood tone of the E-Series violin
and viola bridges and projects more of the traditional bow noise and rich overtones
preferred by Country, Bluegrass and traditional Folk musicians, from recording
legends Byron Berline and Sam Bush.
Not Midi Compatible - 1/4 inch output only

Each of the "signature" Strados bridge support "fingers" of the
violin and viola pickups dedicate dual piezo pickups to each individual string. Responding
to the flex of the pickup "finger" rather than the vibration sensitivity common
to most piezo and transducer pickup systems, the Strados pickup is able to respond with a
true electric-acoustic string tone that is resistant to the sound vibrations that cause
feedback at high volume levels. The special black composite construction of the Strados
bridge pickup allows for maximum string sensitivity and pickup gain, resulting in a
beautiful electric-acoustic tone with warmth and clarity even at high mega-stage
amplification levels.
Zeta's proprietary internal active preamp system increases the power of the pickup signal
from each individual string, leading to separate internal gain controls to provide for
even string balance. This state-of-the-art system delivers a wide range of amplification
flexibility, supporting a variety of tonal characteristics adaptable to diverse playing
techniques and styles of music. An internal 9-volt battery provides over 1,000 hours of
service on average.
Individual string digital outputs allow the use of each string as a separate MIDI channel
through the Synthony for maximum MIDI controller capabilities. Access software notation
programs and MIDI applications, using the Strados Modern Violin as a MIDI controller.
Whether used as an analog pickup or a digital MIDI pickup in conjunction with the Zeta
Synthony II MIDI Controller / Synthesizer (sold separately), the Strados pickup system
provides clarity of string tone without feedback.
Zetas patented Strados piezo pickup system provides a warm, rich electric-acoustic
cello tone. The distinctive Strados "L"-shaped bridge support
"fingers" dedicate dual pickups to each individual string. Responding to the
flex of the "L" rather than the vibration sensitivity of common piezo and
transducer pickup systems, the Strados cello pickup is able to respond with a true
acoustic-electric string tone that is resistant to the sound vibrations that cause
feedback at high volume levels.
The special black composite construction of the Strados cello bridge pickup allows for
maximum string sensitivity and pickup gain, resulting in a beautiful acoustic/electric
tone with warmth and clarity even at high stage-amplification levels.
Zetas patented Strados piezo pickup system provides a warm, rich electric-acoustic
bass tone. The distinctive Strados "L"-shaped bridge support "fingers"
dedicate dual pickups to each individual string. Responding to the flex of the
"L" rather than the vibration sensitivity of common piezo and transducer pickup
systems, the Strados bass pickup is able to respond with a true acoustic-electric string
tone that is resistant to the sound vibrations that cause feedback at high volume levels.
The special black composite construction of the Strados bass bridge pickup allows for
maximum string sensitivity and pickup gain, resulting in a beautiful acoustic/electric
tone with warmth and clarity even at high stage-amplification levels.
Jazz Series Pickup System
Originally developed in the 1980s as a high tech pickup for use with MIDI
controllers, the Jazz pickup system is recognized for its clarity of tone without
extraneous overtones, harmonics or noise.
In an analog output mode, the Jazz pickup produces a clear, clean and pure analog tone
favored by artists ranging from Jazz great Jean-Luc Ponty to Vanessa Mae. For MIDI
applications, the signal from each individual string is totally separated and clear- an
essential property necessary for the excellent MIDI tracking that Zeta is famous for.
The proprietary Zeta Jazz pickup system uses two directional piezo pickups per string. Set
perpendicular to each other, the two piezos read the movement of the string at 90 degree
angles, effectively canceling out unwanted harmonics and bow noise.
Each paired pickup wire is divided and run to a separate internal gain controls so that
the string level can be balanced for analog uses, while allowing the output to be
separated cleanly for MIDI applications.
Zeta's proprietary internal active preamp system increases the power of the pickup signal
from each individual string. This state-of-the-art system delivers a wide range of
amplification flexibility, supporting a variety of tonal characteristics adaptable to
diverse playing techniques and styles of music. An internal 9-volt battery provides over
1,000 hours of service on average.
Individual string digital outputs allow the use of each string as a separate MIDI channel
through the Synthony II for maximum MIDI controller capabilities. Access software notation
programs and MIDI applications, using the output from the Jazz pickup to run to the MIDI
controller.
Whether used as an analog pickup or a digital MIDI pickup in conjunction with the Zeta
Synthony II MIDI Controller / Synthesizer (sold separately), the Jazz pickup system
provides the ultimate in clarity of string tone without feedback.
Synthony II - Out of Production - See the StringPort at www.keithmcmillen.com for details
See the StringPort
at www.keithmcmillen.com for details
The Synthony II is Zetas proprietary MIDI
controller with a built-in sound synthesizer. The unit includes a pitch-to-MIDI converter
that recognizes the analog notes generated by Zetas E-Series, Strados Series or Jazz
Series pickups and converts the analog signal into digital MIDI information. This MIDI
information allows the Synthony to create sounds, and/or send digital information to other
MIDI devices, including the ability to access computer software programs such as music
notation and publishing programs.
You Can Not connect a Zeta
instrument directly to your own MIDI or computer system, you have to have the Synthony II
between the Instrument and your amplifier.
The Synthony II provides access to multitudes of instrument sounds including drums, horns,
woodwinds, pianos, guitars, basses, and special effects. Volume control between the
synthesizer and instrument is controlled entirely from the Zeta instrument- a mixing board
or volume pedal is not needed.
Other control features include pitch bend, transpose, sensitivity, and dynamics mode.
Careful setting of these various commands allows the Synthony II to adapt to any playing
technique. Virtually instant frequency analysis provides fast and accurate pitch and
amplitude information to the synthesizer, with continuous and smooth response to bowing
subtleties. The Synthony II is a standard single-space rack-mountable unit with front
panel controls, display panel and instrument input jack.
